Paputrekppau (49)a island has many kinds of herbal medicine plants. One of the herbal medicine plants is pandanous conoideus (red fruit). In highland areas mainly there are five kinds of pandanus sp. called “Sak”. Sak wou, Yuala, Olomuk, Munani, Heiwa, and so fort. The local people boil it and take it as an alternative medicine for their eyes, heart diseases, breast cancer, lungs problem, hernia and many more. This plant can only be found in Papua and the world starts to get interest in its medicinal benefit, but not many people in the world knows this plant. Testimony of pandanous conoideus appeared so many that its strengthen the conviction about the success on treatment then its popularity increase amazingly developed in the trade of Indonesia.

For example to prove this herbal medicine, less papuan people have problems with their eyes.

Papeda, Papuan main foodOne of the main food of tribal people in Indonesia is Sago (Metroxylon Sp), called Papeda. This food is served when the family gets together for meal. Here is the Indonsian text how to make Papeda:

Papeda atau bubur sagu, merupakan makanan pokok masyarakat Maluku dan Papua Makanan ini terdapat di hampir semua daerah di Maluku dan Papua. Papeda dibuat dari tepung sagu Pembuatnya para penduduk di pedalaman Papua. Tepung sagu dibuat dengan cara menokok batang sagu. Pohon yang bagus untuk dibuat sagu adalah pohon yang berumur antara tiga hingga lima tahun.Mula-mula pokok sagu dipotong. Brief information:

Crossing the river you don’t need to bring you your heavy back pack. You just bring some entrance fee, one copy of travel permit/surat jalan, your camera, sun block, hats, and don’t forget to wear your shoes because some places are slippery and muddy. One guide, one porter to bring lunch box (s) if you are in group.

What you are going see:

This full day tour featuring Wosilimo to see most exciting and two kilometers cave which is called Gua Kontilola. The deeper the most darker, but no worries, there are lighters along the path. While walking, you will Kontilola cave-wosilimosee so many cave bats are hanging on the wall after you passed one kilo meter. Here is one of the exiting places to see and the other some local huts out of it. It continues to Kurulu district to see the 250 years old Mummy. After take some photos, you’ll cross 250 meters, to see the chief called nopase Yali with his compound. He’s one of chief who has 11 wives. The more information; you will see the spy tower on the path to chief huts. It was made of wood to spy enemies who come to kill them, or steal pigs in nopase Yali compound. All the huts are covered by the fence like Balinese people with its compound, but in Dani the hedge are made of wood on the top covered by the savanna/grasses.

Afterwards it will go up to salt water lake. It takes almost 2 hours walk, but depends on how strong are the climber. Here is previous experience needed because little bit up and down hills. But it is part of exercise and makes your body healthier or The trekking is “medium” in difficulty and requires good physical conditions of the trekkers. Even though it is little bit far, the exiting one are that you’ll see down the Baliem valley and the Wamena town from the top of the hill, many kinds of flowers, for instance: orchids, wild sun flowers, and many others there.

What the local people do:

Dani hutsLong time ago until today, the Dani people bring the banana steams, leaves and submerged in the pond. After that they put them in the huts (fire place) until it takes 2-4 months. Then the sell (barter) among the local people or to the relatives, but sometimes they put on the steam (’sani’ traditional way of cooking). Addition Especially for culture enthusiasts! It’s most touch full, if you sleep one day or more with the local people in the huts to learn the way of life, folklore, traditional songs (etai), their believe and whatever you wished to know in the Dani-the paradise valley.

Then it drives to Suroba and Dugum village. We will cross the x traditional bridge to reach these two villages. You will see long hut for kitchen and the pigs are inside. The Lani are – like their neighbors, the Dani - experienced farmers and are using a highly sophisticated irrigation system to produce mainly Sweet Potatoes, Tobacco, Beans, Taro, Spinach, Sugar Cane and Bananas.
Their villages in a beautiful surrounding southeast of Wamena are larger than the small compounds of the Dani and the Yali.
The Lani men, who are more stubby than the Dani, wear thick kotekas (penis gourds), which also serve as a “handbag”, a case for tobacco and valuables. Men sometimes wear hairnets, but the Lani extensively use bird feathers as decoration. Quite often a feather crown is worn even when the men are dressed in western clothes.The women wear short grass skirts, but like everywhere in the valley tend to wear western clothes more and more today.

Like their Dani and Yali neighbors, the women carry everything – like vegetables, small pigs and even their small children – in net-bags across their backs.

Lanis inhabit a smaller part of the Baliem valley, but this is not less beautiful and give uncounted opportunities for trekking. Since the Lani region is not visited as often as the Dani region, only few tourists will be seen during our treks.

The Dani people live in the middle of the large mysterious Baliem Valley. The Dani tribe called themselves as Ahamua people. Long time ago until today, the Dani people bartering business among them or with other tribes in the highland areas. Now Pig barter is still found among them and they still keep their traditions upright until today. For instance you can still find the huts shape, penis gourds for that wearing by the men and Sali/Yokal for women. Additionally, the Dani tribe still keeps the folklore, folk songs, and Stone Axes, traditional balsam or Cassowary bones as a gun that was used to kill their enemies before. Stone knives are still used in the most remote areas of the Baliem Valley even thought it’s kept in the huts. The Yali folklore

There are a lot of folklore in Yali region. One of them is “Mbuge Mbage”. Once there was an old man lived in a hole of a tree. The tree grew near the field belonged to a woman. When she was working in her sweet potatoes garden at her field then suddenly her baby felt and one moment cried out loud. She looked at her baby’s finger that was broken. She felt afraid and leaved the field. The coming days her baby felt over and over again. Then she tried to fine the cause happening to her baby. The man mean to catch the old men. One day the baby parents leaved the huts and left her baby in the hanging nets Dani people called Noken/Su/Sum. They hided in the jungle and look for the baby. Suddenly the old came out from the hole of the wood. It was the time the baby father catched the baby. He tried to catch him, but he couldn’t catch him. The old man was Mbumba. He ran and walked fast climbed the high mountain. It was hard for the baby’s father to catch him. The place he passed by the people now are still cannibal. The Dani Tribe, Papua

The Neolithic warriors and farmers, the Dani tribe, live in the high central range of Papua Island. Until the last decades of the 20^th century the Dani tribes were some of the most isolated people of the world. They grew root crops, raised pig and used polished stone axes like their ancestors did since some 50000 years. They didn’t make pottery or use metal, so their technology was very much like that of the Neolithic of the Old and New Worlds.
Some 250,000 Dani are living in the central mountains, many in small villages among the steep mountain slopes. Dani build round or oval huts, made out of straw and wood, which have thick thatched roofs to protect from rain. In the huts open fire places are used for cooking, keeping the huts warm and to get rid of the mosquitoes. Their villages are surrounded by fences or stone walls. They are farmers, and their small fields are distinctly bordered.
The Dani men and women sleep separately in different huts (called honai), the men in one, women and children in another. Due to old traditions, sex is taboo for the women after giving birth, for 2 to 5 years. As the result the Dani raised fewer but healthier kids since the women’s focus is on babysitting during the first years of their kids life. This is one reason for the still existing polygamy, even though many Danis are Christians today. Dani men are allowed to have more as many wifes as they can afford. A man should give 4-5 pigs to the girl’s parent he wants to marry. For Dani men, his social status are initiated by the number of wives and pigs he has.
One of the main festivities in Dani culture is the Pig Feast, held for weddings, funerals or other important occasions. One or more pigs will be slaughtered (after being killed the traditional way with bow and arrow), prepared and cooked in a traditional earth oven. The whole village and quite often neighbors and guests are invited. The ceremony will take almost a whole day nd will end in sitting and talking until late in the afternoon. Sometimes tourists get an invitation, but it is also possible to arrange a (paid) Pig Feast, where traditional dances, mock-war are also shown. The Dani people will then wear their traditional clothes and paintings.
The Dani often had to fight for their territory, between different villages or against the other tribes. That’s why they have been called the most dreaded head-hunting tribe of Papua. This is remarkable if we consider that they did not eat their enemies, like the majority of other Papuan tribes did.
